Model United Nations

Find out about MUN at Durham University.

What is MUN?

A Brief Introduction

MUN is an incredible educational simulation where students take on the roles of delegates from various countries. You'll delve into the world of international relations, grapple with real-world challenges, and work collaboratively to find solutions.

Whether you're a seasoned debater or a curious newcomer, MUN offers something for everyone. Here's a taste of what you can expect:

  • Become a Global Citizen: Research your assigned country, understand its perspective, and advocate for its interests.
  • Develop Essential Skills: Sharpen your research, public speaking, writing, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Engage in Diplomacy: Negotiate with fellow delegates, build consensus, and craft effective solutions.
  • Make Lasting Connections: Network with students from around the world and forge lifelong friendships.

MUN is your chance to make a difference and provides a dynamic platform to cultivate the critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills sought after in today's world. Explore our website to discover upcoming conferences, access valuable resources, and embark on your journey as a global citizen.

UN Endorsement

Not only is Model UN fun, it is also a great way to learn about how the UN functions. In fact, this is something that the UN itself has recognised through adopting Resolution 77/336 in the General Assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at duuna@durham.ac.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Absolutely not! We welcome all members regardless of age or ability. Just show up and we're sure you'll be able to learn on the job. Otherwise, if this feels too daunting, we also hold MUN Workshops regularly throughout the year, where we guide you through the basics of MUN. At DUUNA, we also offer a free "Delegate Resource Pack" to both members and non-members which we hope might also help you get set for your first MUN session.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: While we would love it if you could attend sessions from start to end, we understand that this is not always possible. As such, partial participation (arriving late or leaving early) is allowed as long as advance notice is provided.  Regardless, please show up. It's fun!

It's really hard to say for sure. At DUUNA, we usually hold 2.5 hour-long simulations every other week, although we can sometimes debate certain topics over two days. At conferences, some committees may discuss the same topic for multiple days on end! Unfortunately, since it depends on so many factors, it's difficult to say for certain.
